Helpful Hints For Your Drip Edge Installation
The purpose of a roof drip edge is to redirect water runoff from your roofing’s fascia board. The fascia is the straight board that runs along the side of the roof, on the lower edge. It is meant to support the lower edge of the bottom row of tiles. Without the drip edge installed, when it rains, water would run down the roof and then straight down the fascia. This is potentially hazardous for your roof’s lifespan, as it would likely lead to leaks and internal damage. Instead, with a drip edge, water is propelled past this board, ideally into a gutter, or at the very least further off the roof’s edge (when no gutter is installed).
Because of this function, the drip edge is an integral piece of your roof. Therefore, when getting it installed, there are a few factors you’ll want to keep in mind to better understand how it works and what a good roof drip edge should look like.
- Your drip edge is most optimal when the vertical lip is placed about 1/4 inch away from the fascia board itself, giving enough space between it and the water runoff.
- It should be installed between the roof sheathing layer and the membrane layer (the ice and water shield or roofing felt).
- If you have an ice and water shield membrane (which, in Florida, is not likely) or roofing felt, make sure that it is installed on top of the drip edge (though it does not have to extend all the way out to the very edge of the drip edge). Otherwise, if the drip edge is on top and the felt beneath, condensation and running water are more likely to get trapped beneath, causing the water to run down the fascia after all.
